Map-like aerial view of Phu Quoc's long west coast with beaches and resort areas

Two clusters, at opposite ends

Phu Quoc's big attractions sit at the two ends of the island. Where you sleep decides how much of each day is spent in the car, so read this before you book a hotel.

The island in one paragraph

Phu Quoc is about 50 km from north to south and up to about 25 km across, and since 1 July 2025 it has been a special zone (đặc khu) of An Giang province. The airport sits about 10 km south of the main town, Duong Dong, on the west coast. The big attractions are not spread evenly: they cluster in the north-west around Bai Dai and Ganh Dau, and in the far south at An Thoi, with Hon Thom island reached from there by cable car. Everything in between is beaches, resorts and the town.

The three areas we work in

VinWonders, Vinpearl Safari and Grand World in one complex, about 40 to 50 minutes from the airport. Read the area page.

South

An Thoi and Sunset Town

The cable car station, Kiss Bridge, the Kiss of the Sea theatre and a night market, about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Duong Dong. Read the area page.

Island

North to south means passing through Duong Dong, so the two legs add up: well over an hour by car in light traffic, and closer to two hours by bus. That is why we never put Hon Thom and VinWonders on the same day, and why your hotel location matters more than its star rating for a park-focused trip.

Where to stay for a park trip

BaseGood forTrade-off
Bai Dai, north-westTwo or more northern days, Grand World evenings, a big family villaEvery southern day starts with a long drive
Duong Dong and Long BeachMixed trips; shortest average drive to both endsBusier, more traffic
Bai Khem and the southHon Thom and Sunset Town evenings; calm east-coast water in the rainy monthsNorthern days start with over an hour in the car

For a week with all four of our days, the usual answer is two bases: three nights in the north, then three or four in the south, moving on the day you would otherwise cross the island anyway. For three or four nights, stay central around Long Beach and accept one longer drive each way.

When to go

Our planning view, from the dry season (November to April), the rainy season (May to October), storm risk in July to September and April heat of 34–36 °C at midday. Parks open all year.

The dry season from November to April brings calm seas on the west coast and the clearest sunsets. From May to October the south-west monsoon makes the west coast rough while east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem turn calm. Storms with heavy rain are possible from July to September, although Phu Quoc is one of the places in Vietnam least often hit directly. The rainy-day plan covers the wet months, and Phu Quoc with children by age covers the heat.

Areas we do not cover

We do not write about the An Thoi archipelago boat routes, the fishing villages of the east coast, the national park trails or the golf courses as products. They are real parts of the island, and specialist operators cover them; our pages stay with the big parks and what a family needs around them.

Ask us

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Which area is best for a first family visit?

If you want only one base, the Long Beach area south of Duong Dong is central enough for both clusters. If the children mainly want the parks, two bases, north then south, save the most car time.

How far is the airport from the parks?

About 40 to 50 minutes by car to the north complex, and about 20 to 30 minutes to Sunset Town in the south.

Is there public transport between the areas?

Free VinBus routes connect the airport with Grand World for park ticket holders, and other bus routes run between Duong Dong, An Thoi and Ganh Dau. They work for light travellers; with small children a car is simpler.
