Hon Thom by cable car, a water-park day for the family

A full day from your hotel to Sunset Town, across 7.9 km of sea by cable car, and into Aquatopia and Exotica on Hon Thom island, with the midday heat spent at lunch and in the shade. Back across before the last cabin, with the 17:00 water show at Kiss Bridge to finish.

This is the day for families whose children live in the pool. The cable car is the longest non-stop three-rope cable car on record, 7,899.9 metres from Sunset Town at An Thoi to Hon Thom island, and the ride itself takes about 15 minutes each way. On the island the ticket covers Aquatopia, a water park with around 20 slide lanes and several shallow kids' areas, and Exotica, a ride village with Vietnam's first wooden roller coaster and a 360-degree lookout.

We plan it for a party with at least one child who can swim or is happy in a lifeguarded kids' pool, and for parents who accept a long day in the sun. The plan below keeps the coaster and the lookout for the cooler first hour, puts lunch and a rest in the 11:00 to 14:00 window, and brings you back across before the afternoon queue for the last cabins builds.

The day, hour by hour

Day 1 · 08:15

Hotel to Sunset Town

The driver collects you at your hotel. From the Duong Dong and Long Beach area the drive to Sunset Town takes about 20 to 30 minutes by car. Pack swimwear under clothes, a dry change for each child, and a small bag per adult; big bags slow down the cable car gates.

We aim to reach Ga Anh Duong, the cable car station inside Sunset Town, before the first boarding at about 09:30, so you join the queue near the front.

Day 1 · 09:30

Cable car across to Hon Thom

Cabins hold 30 people: 24 seated and 6 standing, so a family usually shares with others. The line runs over Hon Roi and Hon Dua on six towers, and the crossing takes about 15 minutes; the cabin moves a little as it passes each tower. Some small children love it and some dislike the height, so hold younger ones beside you. The cabin has no toilet; take everyone before you queue.

Boarding runs in fixed time slots rather than continuously, so the queue moves in steps.

Day 1 · 09:45

Exotica first, while it is cool

The first coaster runs of the day have the shortest queue

Exotica opens at about 09:30. Older children and adults go straight to the wooden roller coaster, Moc Xa Thinh No: a track of nearly 900 metres, a top height of 32.4 metres and a ride of just over two minutes at up to 80 km/h. The height rule is posted at the ride entrance; we could not find a published figure, so we treat it as a ride for older children only until you see the sign.

Smaller children take the lookout and the gentler rides. The aim is to be done with Exotica before Aquatopia opens at about 10:00 and before the sun is high.

Day 1 · 10:30

Aquatopia in the morning window

Aquatopia covers more than 8 hectares. Lifeguards are posted at the pools, slides and kids' areas. Most slides need riders of about 120 cm and up; children of 106 to 119 cm often have to ride with an adult, and children under 1 metre are kept off some active rides. The kids' areas, such as Kids Splash Zone and Monkey Beach, and the gentle wave pool suit the smallest swimmers.

Life jackets for non-swimmers: the agency guide we used advises bringing them, and does not say the park provides them. If your child needs one, pack one that fits.

Day 1 · 11:45

Lunch and the heat break

From 11:00 to 14:00 the sun is strongest; local beach-safety advice is to stay out of the water and sun in that window. Lunch is either the Mango buffet, open 11:00 to 14:30 with the combo ticket, or a counter meal of your choice. After eating, find a covered seating area and let small children nap in the shade.

Day 1 · 13:45

Second water session or Bai Trao beach

A second round in Aquatopia, which closes at about 16:45, or a swim at Bai Trao beach, which is included in the standard ticket. The island buggy links the zones. Reapply sunscreen; even late afternoon the UV is high.

Day 1 · 15:45

Back across and the Kiss Bridge show

Awaken Sea water show at 17:00 in front of Kiss Bridge

Change, dry off and join the return queue before 16:00. The last return trip runs at about 17:30, and late afternoon is when the station gets busy. Back in Sunset Town the standard ticket includes a Kiss Bridge visit with a drink.

At 17:00 the Awaken Sea jet-ski and flyboard show runs in front of the bridge for about 15 minutes. Sunset over the sea comes between about 17:40 in November and 18:31 in July, so in the dry months you can stay for it and still be at the hotel by 18:30 to 19:00.

About the times

Park opening hours are those published for the season running to 30 November 2026, and the park says they can change. Clock times in the block titles are our planning times; the quote fixes them for your date.

Ticket bands on these parks go by measured height, not age. Staff measure at the gate, often with shoes on. A child of 99 cm and a child of 101 cm pay different prices, so we ask for heights, not ages.

Shade, toilets and what to pack

We have not found a published map of shaded areas and toilets on Hon Thom, so we do not print one. What we can say: the slide towers and their queues are in the open sun, the lunch break is spent at a restaurant under a roof, and the cable car stations are enclosed buildings. Ask at the information point on arrival for the nearest toilets to the kids' zones.

  • Toilets: there is none in the cabin. Go before you join the cable car queue in both directions.
  • Shade: plan it, do not hope for it. A pop-up sun hat and a rash vest per child do more than any umbrella.
  • Pack: swimwear worn under clothes, a rash vest and hat per child, SPF 50+, a refillable bottle each, a dry bag for phones, flip-flops for hot decking, and a full change for the return car.
  • Leave at the hotel: large bags, glass bottles and anything you would mind losing at a pool edge.
  • Babies: a sling is easier than a pushchair on the cable car gates and buggy steps.

  • Hon Thom tickets for each person in the right height band, at the park's price on your date
  • Written timed plan with the latest safe return time

If the wind gets up

The cable car runs all year but stops in strong wind. The park operator decides, not us and not the driver. If it is stopped before you leave the hotel, we move the day to another date in your stay at no charge for the car, or switch you to the northern park day if tickets can be changed. If it stops while you are on the island, the park manages the return; the driver waits in Sunset Town and the plan moves to the Kiss Bridge and dinner there.

From May to October afternoons are more often unsettled; in those months we start earlier and plan the return by 15:30. The rainy-day plan covers what to do instead.

Who this day is not for

  • Families with a baby and a toddler only. Two-thirds of the ticket value is slides they cannot ride; the Safari gives them more.
  • Anyone afraid of heights. The cabins cross the sea on towers up to about 164 metres tall, with no ground-level alternative except a boat, which we do not arrange.
  • Families who need air conditioning in the middle of the day. Shade exists, but most of Hon Thom is outdoors.
  • Travellers on a September or October trip with fixed dates and no flexibility. Wind can stop the cable car and we cannot always find another day.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Can a non-swimmer enjoy Aquatopia?

Yes, in the shallow kids' zones and the gentle wave pool with an adult beside them. Lifeguards are posted in the children's areas. Bring a life jacket that fits if your child cannot swim; the guide we used does not say the park lends them.

Is the cable car safe for a toddler?

It is an enclosed cabin of 30 places, built by Doppelmayr as a three-rope system. The crossing takes about 15 minutes. Hold small children on your lap or beside you; the cabin sways slightly passing the towers.

Why not go by boat and include snorkelling?

We do not arrange boats. Island boat trips run again since late July 2026 under stricter checks, and specialist operators sell them; combining one with the cable car makes a very long day in the sun for small children.

What if a child gets too tired by early afternoon?

Cross back early. Your ticket is a return, the driver is waiting in Sunset Town, and the car can take you straight to the hotel. We would rather end at 14:00 than push a tired child through two more hours.
