Hon Thom, the island at the end of the cable
A small island south of An Thoi that has been turned into a water park, a ride village and a beach, reached by a 7.9 km cable car. Families come for one long day; nobody we plan for sleeps there.

What the island really is
Hon Thom is one of the An Thoi islands off the southern tip of Phu Quoc. Today it is mostly a single managed attraction: you arrive by cable car, a buggy links the zones, and your ticket covers nearly everything. It is not a quiet island and it is not a place to explore on your own. Think of it as a large water and ride park with a beach attached, reached by one of the longest cable car crossings in the world.
The cable car opened on 4 February 2018 and runs from An Thoi over Hon Roi and Hon Dua to Hon Thom on six towers. The manufacturer, Doppelmayr, lists it as a 3S system with cabins for 30 passengers, 24 seated and 6 standing, carrying up to 3,500 people an hour each way at 8.5 m/s. By boat the same crossing takes about 30 minutes, but we do not arrange boats.

The three zones and who they suit
Aquatopia water park
Aquatopia covers more than 8 hectares, with around 20 slide lanes from ProSlide and Whitewater. Lifeguards are posted at pools, slides and children's areas. Most slides need riders of about 120 cm and up; children of 106 to 119 cm often must ride with an adult; under 1 metre, some active rides are off-limits. The kids' areas, including Kids Splash Zone, Monkey Beach and a gentle wave pool in the Caves of Waves, are the reason families with small children still come. Agency guides list the water park at about 10:00 to 16:45.
Exotica
Exotica is the dry-ride village. Its headline is Moc Xa Thinh No, Vietnam's first wooden roller coaster: a track of nearly 900 metres, 32.4 metres high, about two minutes long, reaching 80 km/h. The Mat Dai Bang lookout gives a 360-degree view. Agency listings give Exotica's hours as about 09:30 to 16:45. We found no published height limit for the coaster; the sign at the ride decides.
Bai Trao beach
Swimming at Bai Trao is included in the standard ticket. It is the calmer option for a child who has had enough of slides, and the place to sit out the last hour before the return cable car.
The island also sells sea activities such as snorkelling, sea-walking, parasailing and kayaking. We do not arrange them, and they are not in the standard ticket.

How long to spend
Plan a full day, roughly 09:30 to 16:00 on the island. Less than five hours there turns the ticket into a cable car ride with a quick swim, because the boarding queue, the buggy and changing all take time with children. You do not need more than one day unless your children want to repeat the slides.
For nights, the island itself has no family accommodation in our plans. Two or three nights in the south, around Bai Khem, An Thoi or Sunset Town, let you do Hon Thom on the clearest day and the Sunset Town evening on another, with no long drives.
When to go
Our planning view, from the dry season (November to April), the rainy season (May to October), storm risk in July to September and April heat of 34–36 °C at midday. Parks open all year.
The cable car runs year-round except in strong wind. From November to April the sea is calm and days are dry; April middays reach 34–36 °C, so the heat break matters most then. From May to October afternoons are more unsettled and the risk of a wind stop rises; we start earlier and plan to be back across by mid-afternoon.

Getting there
Drive to Sunset Town at An Thoi: about 20 to 30 minutes by car from Duong Dong or the airport. The cable car leaves from Ga Anh Duong station inside Sunset Town. Agency listings give first boarding at about 09:30 and the last return at about 17:30, in fixed time slots. In high season arrive early for check-in at the station.
By public transport, buses between Duong Dong and An Thoi take about 40 to 50 minutes. A short Grab ride in Duong Dong costs 30,000 to 60,000 VND and an airport transfer about 120,000 VND, as indicative prices.

When to skip Hon Thom
- All your children are under 1 metre and none swims. The free ticket is generous, but the day is long for what they can use.
- Anyone in the party is afraid of heights. There is no ground route except a boat.
- You have only one clear day and the forecast shows strong wind. Use it for the north instead.
- You want a quiet beach island. Hon Thom is a busy managed park.
Our day on Hon Thom
We arrange one day here: the Hon Thom cable car and water-park day, with a private car, tickets matched to heights, and a plan built around the midday heat. It pairs with the Sunset Town evening on another day.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
Can we stay overnight on Hon Thom?
We do not plan overnight stays on the island. Families sleep on the main island in the south or around Long Beach and come across by cable car for the day.
Is the cable car included in the park ticket?
Yes. The standard ticket listed by agencies in May 2026 includes the return cable car, Aquatopia, Exotica, the beach, the island buggy and a Kiss Bridge visit.
What is the tallest tower?
The manufacturer gives the tallest tower as up to 164 metres; a 2018 news report gave 174 metres. Either way, it is high, and the cabin passes six towers.
Do we need to book ahead?
For a family with fixed plans, buying ahead avoids the ticket queue on the day, which is why we buy tickets once you confirm.
