Rain clouds over the sea seen from a covered walkway on Phu Quoc

When it rains, what still works

Phu Quoc's rainy season runs from May to October, with short heavy showers and an occasional storm. Here is what still works at each park, who decides when something closes, and how we move a booked day.

What the rainy season looks like

The dry season runs from November to April; the rainy season from May to October, with rougher seas and short, heavy showers. Annual rainfall is around 3,000 mm. The south-west monsoon in those months makes the west coast rough while the east coast turns calm. July to September can bring storms with heavy rain and fairly strong wind, although Phu Quoc is among the places in Vietnam least often hit directly.

For a family, that means most rainy-season days are usable: a shower passes in an hour, and parks stay open. The days that break plans are the windy ones, because wind stops the Hon Thom cable car, and the evenings when outdoor shows are changed for weather.

The VinWonders aquarium holds over 300 marine species, and Sea Shell takes about 40 minutes indoors; the 4D cinema runs 30-minute shows from 10:30 to 18:00; Fire Phoenix Square's indoor games fill about an hour. The operator's own family guide suggests starting indoors in the hottest part of the day, and the same logic works for rain.

Plan B for each of our days

Hon Thom day

If the cable car is stopped before you leave, we move the day to another date in your stay at no charge for the car, or switch to VinWonders if the tickets can be changed. If wind stops it while you are on the island, the park manages the return; the driver waits in Sunset Town.

VinWonders and Safari

We swap the days so the Safari falls on the drier one, and use VinWonders' indoor halls through the wet hours.

Grand World evening

With heavy rain forecast, we move the evening to another night if the show tickets can be changed. The Teddy Bear Museum carries a wet late afternoon.

Sunset Town evening

If the night show is cancelled before you leave, we move it or refund the show tickets as far as the seller refunds them. Dinner and the bridge can still go ahead in a light shower.

How we decide, and what happens to your booking

  1. We check the forecast the evening before each day and message you through the channel you chose in the form.
  2. If an operator has announced a stop or a cancellation, we follow it; we do not argue with a park about wind.
  3. We offer the move first: another date in your stay, or another of our days.
  4. If no date works, tickets are refunded as far as the park or seller refunds them, and car hours not used are not charged.
  5. We never send you to a park that has announced it is closed for weather.

Book flexible days where you can. A family with six nights can absorb one moved day; a family with two nights and fixed plans in September takes the risk the weather brings.

Rainy months worth considering anyway

Parks are open all year, and east-coast beaches such as Bai Sao and Bai Khem are calm from May to October. A family that stays in the south, keeps one flexible day, and treats the north complex as the wet-weather option can have a good trip in the rainy season. The An Thoi and Sunset Town page and the Bai Dai and Ganh Dau page explain the two bases; the tours page lists the days.

Common questions

Questions travellers ask most

Should we avoid Phu Quoc from May to October?

Not necessarily. Showers are usually short and parks stay open. Keep one flexible day for the cable car, which stops in strong wind, and base yourself where the sea is calm.

Which park is best on a wet day?

VinWonders, for its aquarium, 4D cinema and indoor games. The Safari bus also works, but walking the open zoo does not.

Who pays if a show is cancelled for weather?

Ticket refunds follow the seller's rules; we pass on whatever they refund and do not charge car hours you did not use. We try to move the evening to another night first.
